Dominic Ford I am a postdoc in the Astrophysics Group of the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, working on the Square Kilometre Array (SKA). My research interests include:

  • The development of optimised numerical algorithms for high-performance computing, and in particular for use on graphics processor (GPGPU) clusters.
  • The development of a prototype software correlator with demonstrable scalability to the specification required for SKA Phase 1.
  • Calibration and imaging in radio interferometers.

In the past, I have also spent time studying the propagation of radiation through astrophysical dust clouds and the properties of heavily obscured star-forming regions, which was the subject of my PhD.

Things I do in my spare time include:

  • Working on various open-source software projects, including acting as the lead developer of PyXPlot, a Linux graphing and vector graphics package which is now available in the Ubuntu package archive.
  • Talking about astronomy for the Naked Astronomy podcast, and occasionally on BBC local radio across the east of England.
  • Producing ephemerides for amateur astronomers, many of which are available on this website.
